Here, experts from Mount Pleasant Vet clinic, review different strategies for training your dog.
- Start training your pet right from a young age. Puppies, like children are very impressionable and can learn tricks quite quickly. Start your puppy on the right path by becoming their leader, being strong, stable and consistent in front of them, correcting them instantly when they are wrong.
- Young puppies have a habit of housebreaking. While older dogs might not jump at the chance of running away when the door is open, young puppies can. So, you need to program good habits in their mind. For instance, during the early days, take the pup to your garden or somewhere close around the home. Play with them, make them feel safe. This way, they will learn how to go outside successfully without running away.
- It is important to introduce a collar or a leash, even if you don’t want your dog to wear it all the time. Helping them wear it will ensure that they learn to behave outside and avoid being aggressive. Meanwhile, take them for a walk inside the home before taking them out so that they practice wearing a leash.
- Tell him what you want them to do. And be consistent with it. Dogs can understand no. So, go ahead and use the word. But that doesn’t mean you should jump or shout the word. Use it patiently.
- Most importantly, be generous with your affection. A lot of dog owners don’t realize the true power of affection. Rewarding your pet softly, without any boom-bang will not just help them realize that you care, but even reinforce the habits. Be extra generous with praise.
